John Hunter and the Mayan Gods review: the game format

John Hunter and the Mayan Gods uses five reels, three rows and ten paylines. Its official introduction centres on progressive free spins: reaching another level awards additional rounds, with multipliers also part of the feature. Progression within the bonus is its main documented distinction.

The starting round and progression

Three or more scatters start twelve free spins at level one. Wild symbols can add rounds and advance the level, while higher levels replace lower symbols on the reel strips. Three or more scatters during the feature award another twelve spins. The visible level rules show why the bonus changes as it progresses: it is a change to the symbol population, rather than a promise that every later spin will win.

Wild expansion and scatter pay

The wild can expand vertically to fill its reel, and occurs on reels two, three and four. It substitutes for ordinary symbols, while the scatter has its own award and trigger rules. Scatters can appear across all reels; three, four and five have different payouts in the displayed paytable. Those scatter awards and the progressive free-spin levels are separate parts of the calculation.
